The Seamless Switch explores, among other things, the dialogue between analog and digital image creation. The title refers to a term from the world of Visual Effects (VFX)—the moment in a film when the camera transitions unnoticed from a filmed live-action scene to a digital double.
In addition to sculptures, the exhibition features renderings and photographs of model scenes made of paper. The interplay between authenticity and fiction is heightened by the deliberate alternation of photography and 3D renderings. The goal is to express the feeling of “breaking the fourth wall”—that moment in theater or film where the artifice of the production is revealed through direct address to the audience. Numerous tools from the realms of photography, computer animation, and the studio appear within the images. These are placed intentionally to address the “decay” of the illusion through the very means used to create it.
